The plaintiffs are nominally corporations: "The Continuing Episcopal Church - a new Jersey corporation (CEC)", and "The Holy Eastern Orthodox Catholic and Apostolic Church, Inc. - a Massachusettes corporation (THEOCACNA aka OCACNA)".
The real plaintiffs, however, are Joseph Colin James III and Victor Prentice, the owners, proprietors and sole board members of both corporations (both are on both boards).
(The plaintiffs are represented by attorney Glen F. Redmond Gallinger of Colorado Springs. The resident agent in N.J. for "CEC" (corporation # 0100232652) is Rachel Lilienthal Stark. The resident agent in Mass. for "THEOCACNA" is Bp. Paul Diederich -- a man who really ought to know better.)
Joseph Colin James III, also known variously as Joseph James, Colin James III and "CJ3", 52, recently moved to Colorado Springs, Colorado. He previously lived in Loveland, Colorado.
According to depositions in JYMIS vs JAMES, for about four or five years James had no outside employment and subsisted mainly off a trust fund set up by his now-deceased mother, Helen James. His father, Colin James of Denver, is a retired attorney. According to the many old Usenet postings of his, prior to his brief "retirement", Mr. James worked as either employee or contractor for the U.S. Bureau of Land Management.
According to a resume he had previously posted at http://www.the3dcv.demon.co.uk/the3dcv/page43.html, Mr. James earned a B.A. from Colorado College in 1972 and purchased a Ph.D. in 1998 from the diploma-mill known as Pacific Western University.
Mr. James is a published author in his own right. His first work, 1978, is the field of astrology: The Relative Strength of Signs and Planets.
Mr. James became affiliated with the autocephalic church movement around 1984. According to Ward et al., in 1984 James was consecrated under unknown circumstances by Bp. Dismas Markle of Florida.
There seems to be no publically available evidence that James conducts, or has ever conducted, anything resembling a public Christian ministry. An examination of James' "ministry" web site shows that he, instead, devotes an inordinate amount of time and effort into defaming and harassing people.
Mr. James was voted in January 1996 as "Usenet Kook of the Month". If you search the Usenet for all references to "Colin James III" and "CJ3", you'll quickly see why.
In the late 1990's, Mr. James teamed up with Victor Prentice, and the two started attacking other autocephalic clergy and churches in early 1999. They also attacked The Orthodox Church in America, which is obviously a canonical (*) Orthodox church by any standard. These attacks are all documented by many postings on the Usenet (both by James/Prentice and by the many victims).
(The affected autocephalic churches include: The Charismatic Episcopal Church, The Christian Episcopal Church, The Antiochian Catholic Church in America,The Russian Orthodox Church in America (ROCA), The Orthodox Catholic Church of North America, The Eastern Orthodox Catholic Church in Canada and the Americas, The Roman Orthodox Church , among others.)
Two lawsuits were filed against Mr. James in the late 1990's for his nasty, anti-social activities. The first was JYMIS et al vs JAMES, COLIN III (Larimer County, Colorado, 1997 CV 840 and 1999 CA 2095). The second was WILSON, SCOTT vs JAMES, COLIN III d/b/a THE CONTINUING EPISCOPAL CHURCH et al (Pima County, Arizona, CV99-017192A-RA). An article, Koops and Kops clash online, was published in The Boulder Weekly, a weekly newspaper, about the first case.
Victor Prentice, about age 60, lives in Mountain View, Arkansas.
Prentice affiliated with the autocephalic church movement in the mid-1990s. He was originally consecrated in 1996, I think, by Bp. Denis Garrison et al. for one of the many offshoots of THEOCACNA (which, at one time, was a thriving church). Soon after he teamed up with Mr. James to "take over" the name of the historic THEOCACNA. In Sept. 1999 he renounced his prior consecration by Garrison and was unconditionally re-consecrated by Mr. James. As previously stated, arlier that year, Prentice and James started attacking other autocephalic clergy and churches, as well the obviously-canonical (*) Orthodox Church in America.
As with James, above, there seems to be no publically available evidence that Prentice conducts, or has ever conducted, anything resembling a public Christian ministry. An examination of Prentice's many "ministry" web sites shows them to alternate between being defamatory and highly defensive.
Little is known about Mr. Prentice prior to his becoming part of the autocephalic church movement. It is known that he used to live in the midwest (Ohio and/or Michigan) and that he fathered a daughter, Shindle Shinaver.
The only known article in print about Mr. Prentice was published by the Ecclesia news service (of The Orthodox Church of Greece) in 1999 for his violent and defamatory attacks upon Greek Orthodox laywoman Marina Mary Robb.
* Note: The word "canonical" varies in meaning. Many autocephalic churches consider themselves to be quite canonical. In the narrow context of this single web page, I am using "canonical" to mean in current and publically acknowledged full communion with one or more of the ancient Patriarchates. Orthodox churches go into and out of communion with the Patriarchates all the time.
Just because a church may not be currently recognized by the Patriarchates as "canonical", doesn't mean it is doing good and valid ministry for our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ.
